Discovering a new path through litigation
As a litigation lawyer at DLA Piper, I quickly learned that success in complex cases requires more than legal expertise. It demands strategic project management. I found myself naturally drawn to the challenge of marshalling vast cases, coordinating teams, and driving efficiency. It wasn’t just about winning cases; it was about how we worked.
I began sharing new ways of working with my immediate colleagues. Better case management, smarter use of technology, and saw a growing appetite across the firm for these approaches. That’s when I had a realisation: I could bring even more value by stepping into a different role.
The moment everything shifted
It was an epiphany. I saw how DLA Piper was investing in legal operations and innovation, and I recognised that my skills could help bridge the gap between legal practice and project management. I knew I could help our tech teams understand the lawyer’s perspective and drive strategic change across the firm.
So I made the decision to pivot. It was a leap of faith, but in my mind, it was already a done deal.
Support that made it possible
I walked into my head of department’s office – no appointment, just a conversation I felt I owed to the team I’d worked with for 12 years. The response was nothing short of incredible. My manager didn’t try to talk me out of it. He understood my conviction and immediately made a call to explore how the firm could support my transition.
That moment showed me what DLA Piper is really about: empowering people to grow, evolve, and shape their own careers.
What I’ve learned
This journey has taught me that careers aren’t linear – and they don’t have to be. I’ve learned to trust my instincts, embrace change, and lean into the skills that make me unique. At DLA Piper, I’ve found the freedom to redefine my path and contribute in new, meaningful ways.
I’m proud to be part of a firm that sees potential beyond job titles and supports its people in designing careers without limits.
